Troubleshooting

The messages below are quoted as the app shows them. If yours isn’t here, or the fix doesn’t help, report it on GitHub; the template asks for everything we need.

The app can’t reach my instance. Type the address without anything in front of it (wanderer.example.com); the app adds https:// itself. Instances must be reachable over HTTPS; connections to a plain http:// address are blocked by the phone. If the address is right and the web interface works in your browser, check the next entry.

I can log in, but the map stays empty and most things fail. The instance is running a version that doesn’t support the app yet. Ask your administrator to follow Mobile app support.

Login fails with the right password. Log in on the web once to rule out the account itself, then try again. If your instance uses a third-party login (Google, GitHub, …), use the same button in the app.

I want to use a different instance or account. Log out from the bottom of the settings. The welcome screen lets you pick another instance.

“Location services are disabled. Please enable GPS to use navigation.” Location is switched off at the system level. Turn it on in your phone’s quick settings or under Settings → Location.

“Location permission is required for navigation.” / “Location permission is permanently denied. Please enable it in Settings.” Open your phone’s Settings → Apps → wanderer → Permissions → Location and allow it. On Android choose Allow all the time so recordings continue with the screen off; on iOS choose Always.

My recording stopped when the screen locked. Background location isn’t allowed. See Allow location access in the background. The app only asks once; after that the permission has to be changed in the system settings.

“Unable to determine your location. Please try again.” The phone hasn’t got a GPS fix yet. Step outside or away from tall buildings and wait a few seconds. Indoors, GPS can take a long time or fail entirely.

“Couldn’t start navigation. Check your connection and try again.” Turn-by-turn directions are fetched from your instance when you start navigating a trail that isn’t stored on the device. Either connect, or download the trail while you still have a connection; the directions are saved with it.

“Only GPX files can be imported offline.” KML, KMZ, TCX and FIT files are converted by your instance. Connect, or convert the file to GPX first.

“Could not import file” / “Error reading file” The file couldn’t be read as a track. Check that it opens on the web; if it does, file a bug and attach the file (renamed to .txt).

“Editing works on the server copy of this trail. Connect to the internet to edit it.” / “This trail is already on the server. Connect to the internet to delete it.” The trail lives on your instance; changes and deletions are made there. Connect and try again.

“This trail is uploading right now. Wait for the upload to finish, then try again.” A recording or import is being sent to your instance. Wait for the sync chip to disappear.

“This trail is no longer on this device.” The device copy was removed (for example after logging out and in with another account). Download it again from its detail page.

The sync chip says “Upload failed · Tap to retry”. The last upload attempt didn’t go through. Tap the chip once you have a connection. If it keeps failing, the trail may be larger than your instance allows (photos!). Try removing photos, or ask your administrator about the upload limits.

“Trail saved, but some waypoints failed to save.” / “Trail saved, but N photos couldn’t be saved.” The trail itself is on your instance. Open it, choose Edit, and add the missing waypoints or photos again.

“No offline regions available” / “Ask your Wanderer instance administrator to configure downloadable regions.” Your instance hasn’t enabled any regions. Point your administrator to the region catalogue page.

A region is greyed out with “Not yet available”. Your instance has enabled the region but is still preparing its map files. This can take a while for large regions; check back later.

A region shows “Build failed”. The instance couldn’t prepare the region. Your administrator can see why in the server logs.

“Download map data first” on the elevation data row. Elevation data can only be added to a region whose Vector map is already downloaded.

“Can’t load regions” / “Connect to the internet to browse and manage downloadable regions.” The list of regions comes from your instance. Regions you already downloaded keep working offline.

The trail shows on an empty background. The trail is downloaded, but the map region around it isn’t. See Download map regions.

The map doesn’t rotate with me. That’s the default. Tap the compass to switch to heading-up mode; see Navigate a trail.

I left the trail and the directions don’t change. The app doesn’t reroute in the beta; it keeps pointing at the next turn of the original trail. Use the map to get back onto it.

I don’t hear any directions. There is no voice guidance in the beta. Directions are shown in the banner at the top of the screen.
